25/08/2005 - Throwing down the Corporate Challenge

ORGANISERS of the fifth Masters World Mountain Running Championships are still looking for local companies and other organisations to take up the challenge!
The Championships are being staged on the hills above Keswick in a fortnight’s time.
And a new event, the Cumbrian Corporate Challenge, will make its debut as part of the weekend’s programme.
Around 1,000 of the world’s leading senior mountain runners are set to descend on the town for the Masters series of races on Saturday, September 10th, which are open to men aged 40 and above and women aged 35 and above.
An Open Race, scheduled for runners of all ages on Sunday, September 11th, will incorporate the new team event, which will be sponsored by George Fisher Ltd., the well-known Keswick-based mountain equipment specialist.
Jon Broxap, Chairman of the championships’ Local Organising Committee, said: “There’s going to be something for everyone over the two days, whether they’re established world class mountain runners or people keen to give it a go for the first time.
“Employees of any Cumbrian company or private or public sector organisation can enter the Open race as a team. It doesn’t matter how many take part from any one organisation because it will be the top three runners from each team that score points.
“The winning trio will receive a trophy and medals from George Fisher Ltd. and we hope that as many people as possible from the area take advantage of the opportunity to be part of this unique weekend.”
The course will be 11.6 kilometres in length and will run from Keswick’s Fitz Park to the top of Lonscale Fell and back, a climb of 684 metres.
Michael Standring, Managing Director of George Fisher Ltd., added: “There are a lot of people throughout Cumbria who run on the fells just to keep fit - most of our staff do.
“We are all for team building here at George Fisher and perhaps other businesses throughout Cumbria could see this as a 'business opportunity' and put forward a team.
“Just because the weekend's activities are based around the World Championships doesn't mean that the Sunday event is an elitist one, and perhaps thereafter some competitors may well decide to get involved in fell running on a regular basis.”
The weekend’s events are being supported by a range of Cumbrian businesses, including Lowe Alpine and Cockermouth-based brewers Jennings Brothers Plc, and by the local authority, Allerdale Borough Council.
Anyone who would like details on how to enter a team should contact John Reynolds at Allerdale Borough Council on 01900 326344.
