06/09/2005 - All systems go for the Masters

FINAL preparations are now taking place for one of the region’s most prestigious sporting events of the year.
The 5th Masters World Mountain Running Championships take place in and around Keswick this weekend with a record entry already secured.
Over 1,100 top veteran mountain runners from all over the world will compete in various age groups this Saturday (September 10th), eclipsing the previous best entry for the event, which was 741 in Austria in 2003.
Entries have been received from 26 countries including the USA, Australia, Russia, Italy, Ireland, Gibraltar, Holland, Germany, Ukraine, Japan, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, France and New Zealand.
And with many runners expected to bring partners, children and supporters, Keswick is bracing itself for a mini invasion this weekend!
Organisers have secured two additional car parking areas for competitors and spectators, in addition to the town’s normal provision.
Competitors and spectators are advised to park at the Hospital Field, which is situated off the A5271 Crosthwaite Road. A fee of £2 per day will be charged and around 300 parking spaces will be available.
A further 60 spaces will be available in a field off Brundholme Road, which will be clearly marked. Again, a fee of £2 per day will be charged. Visitors are requested not to take vehicles up to the Gale Road car parking area between Latrigg and Skiddaw.
In addition to these areas, Keswick boasts a range of public car parks and organisers are requesting that people pay close attention to the regulations governing those areas.
“Please adhere strictly to the conditions of use,” said Local Organising Committee member John Reynolds.
“It is most important that a vehicle is parked properly, wholly and solely within one marked car space, to maximise parking opportunities for other motorists.
“Please also remember that many of the streets in Keswick are disc parking zones, where parking is strictly time limited.
“If you do not have a disc, please DO NOT leave your vehicle in a disc zone to go and look for one, as you could incur a penalty notice. Instead, write the time of arrival on a piece of paper and display it on the dashboard so that it can be easily read from outside the vehicle.”
The Masters series of races takes place on Saturday, September 10th, starting and finishing at Keswick’s Fitz Park.
The courses run from Fitz Park out along the lower flanks of Latrigg and Skiddaw before looping onto Lonscale Fell and returning to Fitz Park (first race starts 11am, final race starts 3.30pm).
An Open Race for anyone over the age of 18 will take place on Sunday, September 11 (starting at 12 noon, entry £5 on the day). It will include the Cumbrian Corporate Challenge for teams of at least three runners representing Cumbrian businesses or organisations.
The whole event kicks off with an official launch ceremony outside Keswick’s Moot Hall at 7pm on Friday night, with a flag parade of competing nations and Dearham Brass Band providing musical entertainment, which members of the public are welcome to attend.
