29/09/2006 - Port's improving financial performance

THE revitalised Port of Workington is continuing to turn in a strong financial performance following the launch of a major investment programme.

The Workington Harbour Board was told recently that operating revenue for the first five months of the current financial year was £584,139, almost £120,000 ahead of budget.

That helped the port return a small trading surplus for the same period, £1,026, as opposed to a forecast loss of £104,000.

The figures show a continuation of the upward trend highlighted by the last full year figures. A trading surplus of £53,362 was recorded in 2005/06 compared with a loss of around £350,000 in 2004/05.

Port Manager Jeremy Lihou said: “The improvement in our trading position is extremely pleasing. It reflects the hard work and dedication of the workforce and is moving us in the right direction towards long term sustainability.”

The Workington Harbour Board was formed last year to help secure a more stable long term future for the port.

It comprises representatives of a number of organisations, including Cumbria County Council, the port’s owners, as well as Allerdale Borough Council, West Lakes Renaissance (the Urban Regeneration Company for West Cumbria and Furness) and the private sector.

The partners have each committed funding towards an overall £14.5 million improvement programme designed to protect and develop the port’s commercial operation through to 2015.

Board Chair Janet Fallon added: “This upward trend is very encouraging. The continuing attraction of new business to the port from both existing and new customers will, we hope, secure further upward trends in the future.”
