03/09/2007 - Council urges return of electoral registration forms
Allerdale Borough Council is using SMS texting for the first time in a bid to encourage residents to return their electoral registration information this autumn.
The Annual Canvass forms will be hitting residents’ postboxes from this week. The Council is once again offering telephone and internet registration, using a two-part security code printed on the top of the form, as well as by post. For the first time, residents can text the Council if they have no changes to make to their details.
Full instructions to help residents register their information will be provided with the registration forms. The new register will be published on 30 November 2007.
All households need to register their information on an annual basis to enable them to vote in local and national elections.
Sheila Brown, Allerdale Borough Council’s Democratic Services Manager, said: “It is wrongly assumed that the only reasons for registering are so that you can vote or so that the Council can send you a council tax bill. Many residents find they cannot get a contract for a new mobile phone or get a loan or a mortgage, because they are not on the electoral register. “
For further information or help on completing the forms, contact Allerdale Borough Council's electoral registration team on (01900) 702550.
