Key dates and information for the general election

  • The deadline has passed to register to vote. The registration deadline was midnight on Monday 22 May. Anyone who has registered to vote at the local elections in May 2017 does not need to re-register in order to take part in the 2017 General Election (unless their circumstances have changed since, such as moving house).
  • The deadline to apply for a postal vote and postal proxy applications, and for making changes to existing postal or proxy votes is 5pm, Tuesday 23 May. (Please note the postal votes are dispatched in batches on the following dates: Monday 22 May and Tuesday 30 May. If you applied for a postal vote after Tuesday 2 May it will be included in the second batch. Please take this into consideration if you are planning to be away from home during the election as we would advise you apply for a proxy vote instead. For more information please call the Electoral Services team on 0303 123 1702). 
  • The deadline to apply for a proxy vote, where a voter nominates a trusted person to cast a vote on their behalf, is 5pm, Wednesday 31 May.
  • British citizens living overseas and who have been registered to vote in the UK in the past 15 years are eligible to vote at this election. Anyone not yet registered should apply now .
  • Electoral Commission advice for British citizens living overseas who are not sure whether there is enough time for a postal vote to be sent to them and returned to the UK by polling day, is that they should apply for a proxy vote.
  • On polling day, Thursday 8 June, polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.
