Clinical waste disposal

Clinical waste means any waste which consists of the following:

  • Human or animal body parts.
  • Human or animal bloods or other body fluids.
  • Excretion.
  • Drugs or other pharmaceutical products.
  • Swabs and dressings.
  • Used syringes, needles or other sharp instrument (which may prove a hazard unless previously rendered safe).
  • Any other waste arising from: medical, nursing, dental, blood transfusion, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practice, investigation, treatment, care, teaching or research and which may cause infection.

Clinical Waste is categorised depending on the risk to human health that the waste poses.  The collection and disposal of this waste depends on the category. For more advice on the collection and treatment of clinical waste please consult your district nurse who will be able to advise you on the categories of clinical waste and the best disposal option.
