Pest Control

Allerdale Borough Council provide a pest control service. If you are having problems with any of the pests below please complete the treatment request form. To find out how much this service costs see Allerdale Borough Council's Fees and Charges page.

Pests we do treat

Ants

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will provide a service for the treatment of ants in a domestic property.  This service will incur a charge.

Fleas

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers provide a service for the treatment of fleas in a domestic property.  This service will incur a charge.  When a householder contacts the Council they will be asked if they have a cat or dog. If so, they must treat the animal prior to the Pest Control Officer visiting the property. A householder will also be asked to remove any delicate pets, i.e. birds, hamsters, tropical fish etc.

A Pest Control Officer will normally fumigate a whole household including all furnishings such as carpets, curtains, beds, bedding etc. The same procedure applies to commercial properties i.e. hotels, guest houses, holiday cottages. For these properties a charge will be made.

Mice/Rats

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will treat rats in domestic premises free of charge (including allotments).

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will treat mice in domestic properties (but not mice in the garden), this service will incur a charge.

Advice is given to the householder on safety procedures and follow-up visits are also carried out.

The Pest Control Officers will treat commercial properties such as farms, hotels etc; a charge will be incurred for this service.  Information is automatically passed on to the Environmental Health Unit regarding any calls made to food premises.

Wasps

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will treat wasp problems for a charge. Please note that no external treatment will be carried out at a height higher than 2 storeys.

Beetles, Bed Bugs, Cockroaches and Woodlice

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will treat the above problems for a charge. Also cluster flies, silverfish and red spidermite.

Pests we do not treat

Pigeons

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will only deal with pigeons in derelict buildings. Special arrangements have to be in place as the work is carried out at night when the birds are roosting. No other call-outs for pigeons are undertaken without a charge and subject to health and safety issues

Termites

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will not visit a household with a termite problem. However, if the householder brings a sample in a jar to any council office the sample will be passed on to the Pest Control Officer.

Voles

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will not handle problems with voles.

Insects

Allerdale Borough Council's Pest Control Officers will not treat crawling insects i.e. earwigs, weevils, blue bottles, flying ants, moths and bees (which are a protected species).

Other Pests we do not treat are Birds, Seagulls, Bats (which are a protected species), squirrels, cats and rabbits .

Fumigations

Should your property require fumigation:

  • All floor areas must be clear and the whole house must be vacuumed on morning of appointment.
  • Sprays can be purchased from hardware stores which will keep the problem controlled until your appointment day.
  • If you have a cat or dog they must be treated for fleas separately
  • Pregnant ladies, babies and children under 5 must not be on the premises during the treatment and after treatment for 2 days
  • Other people and pets must not re-enter the property after treatment until treated areas are completely dry and do not vacuum treated areas for 7 days to give time for the treatment to work.
