Vulcan Park was opened in 1925 and has seen
many changes over the years.
- In the mid
1980's the amenities within
the park included: Infants/junior playground, tennis
courts, café facility, public toilets, shelter/meeting place for
senior citizens, recreational football pitch, crazy golf, putting
green and bowling green.
- In
2000 the play areas were
redeveloped into one central location and old storage sheds were
removed along with the crazy golf and putting green. Facilities now
include a large equipped children's play area, a café, bowling
green and tennis courts.
- Present
day There is now an
opportunity to further develop the facilities in the park and
continue an improvement programme to help make the
area cleaner, greener and more welcoming for both the local
community and visitors, as well as creating a safer environment
for people to enjoy outdoor activities.
Public Consultation
The views of members of the public are being sought to help shape
proposals for improvements to Vulcan Park at Workington.
A draft action plan, which identifies potential
areas for improvement, has been developed by officers of Allerdale
Borough Council, in partnership with local user groups, and the
local community is now being asked to comment upon the plans.
Households in the streets surrounding the park
will receive letters and a leaflet within the next week asking for
feedback on the plans. Youth groups, schools and other
organisations, such as the police and housing associations, will
also be contacted for their views on the action plan.
A copy of the action plan is available below
and consultation leaflets are available from Allerdale House
reception, The Regeneration Centre on Ramsey Brow and the
Council Office on Finkle Street, Workington.
Councillor John Colhoun, Executive Member with
responsibility for Leisure, said: "I'm sure all the people of the
town will welcome this opportunity to present their views in a
considered way. I look forward to hearing their reactions to these
comprehensive proposals for the Park and to their own ideas for
improving this valuable part of Workington's landscape."
A workshop for the public was held on
Wednesday 16 March 2005 at St. Michael's Church to further develop
the action plan.
