The Evidence Base

The New Local Development Framework process puts a heavy emphasis on ensuring that plans and proposals are supported by a robust evidence base. It is hoped that comprehensive data on the current state of the borough will allow the Council to put forward the most suitable ideas regarding future development within your local area.

The various sections of the evidence base can all be accessed from these pages, via the links below. This page will be subject to regular updates.

The Allerdale Atlas

The Allerdale Atlas is a collection of information and data for the borough covering a wide range of spatial planning themes including housing, employment, retail, environment, heritage, health, crime, transport, accessibility and climate change. It is being used to help identify the key issues and strengths for various localities across the borough. This will allow us to formaulate planning policy options that will help us come up with the most suitable planning policy for the different parts of the borough. The Atlas can be viewed here.

Strategic

• Cumbrian Sustainable Community Strategy - An aspirational document looking at how to improve the quality of life for people living in Cumbria. Produced by the Cumbrian Strategic Partnership, still in draft stages.
• West Cumbria Sustainable Community Strategy: Future Generation - An aspirational document looking at how to improve the quality of life for people living in the Allerdale and Copeland areas for the period of 2007-2027. Produced by the West Cumbria Strategic Partnership.  
• Britain's Energy Coast: A Master Plan for West Cumbria - An aspirational document produced by the West Cumbrian Strategic Forum looking to transform the region's energy economy by 2027.  

Housing

• Meeting the 5 Year Housing Land Supply - Identifying sites to meet housing needs for the next 5 years
• Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment - Identifying land needed to meet housing needs for the period 2011 - 2026
• Housing Market Assessments - Identifying the need for affordable housing on a parish by parish basis  

Built and Natural Environment

• Strategic Flood Risk Assessment - Identifying those parts of the borough at risk from flooding
• Cumbria Biodiversity Evidence Base - A series of maps detailing potential and known locations of key and protected species across the county 
• Nature on the Map - A national database of designated areas of nature protection. Presented by Natural England using an interactive map. 

Employment and Tourism

• West Cumbria Employment Land and Premises Study (2008) - a study looking at employment land availability and use across Allerdale and Copeland.
• Cumbria Employment Land Availability - an annual study, conducted by Cumbria County Council, to identify sites suitable for employment use.  

Leisure & Recreation

• Allerdale Open Space Audit and Needs Assessment - A report on the current state of open spaces across the borough.
• Allerdale Play Strategy: Playing for Real - A strategy looking at provision and requirements for children's play areas within the borough.
• Active Places Database - A national database of sport and recreation facilities in England. Presented by Sport England using an interactive map. 

Retail

• West Cumbria Retail Review (2009) - An assessment of retail capacity within Allerdale and Copeland
