Household waste - special collections for large items

Allerdale Borough
Council offers a special refuse collection to householders within
the borough.
We will arrange the collection of all bulky household
items for a fee. As a general rule, bulky items can be
defined as anything that you might take with you when you move
house such as furniture (chests, wardrobes, dressers etc), carpets,
beds, mattresses, bicycles, exercise equipment, garden equipment
and the like.
White goods can be collected at a fee per unit and are sent
locally for recycling. White Goods are items such as e.g. fridges,
freezers, cookers, TV's, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble
dryers etc
We can also make arrangements for the collection of small
amounts of Garden and D.I.Y. waste for a fee. Large
amounts will require an inspection.
To arrange collection of bulky household items using the special
collection service you can use the
online form, email domestic.refuse@allerdale.gov.uk or

New Rules for Recycling Plasterboard, Plaster and Gypsum
Wastes
On 1 April 2009 the Environment Agency altered its guidance for
the management of waste plasterboard, plaster and gypsum. The new
guidance states that plasterboard, plaster and gypsum waste should
be collected separately and sent for recovery.
This does not affect plaster attached to other waste, bricks for
example, however, it does affect plaster mixed with other waste. So
if plaster is not attached to other waste it should be segregated
before being deposited at a Household Waste Recycling Centre
(HWRC).
This change has been made to encourage additional recycling of
these materials. In addition, if these wastes are landfilled with
other waste types they can degrade, producing an odorous gas.
Due to the number of different containers required it is not
possible to provide a separate container for these wastes at all
Household Waste Recycling Centres. Your nearest sites with suitable
facilities are:
- Flusco HWRC near Penrith
- Project Furness HWRC, Barrow in Furness
Details of these sites can be found at recycleforcumbria.org
If you have any questions regarding the provision of
services for waste plasterboard or gypsum you can contact Cumbria
County Council's recycling helpline on 0845 055 1118. If you have
any questions regarding the new Agency guidance on these wastes you
can contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506506.
