Disposal sites
Allerdale Borough Council in partnership with FOCSA Services are
responsible for the collection of refuse and recycling
material from households in the Borough.
Refuse is collected and taken for landfill disposal
to one of two landfill sites which are operated by
Cumbria County Council.

The amount of waste Local Authorities dispose of at
landfill sites is now governed by Landfill Directive 31/1999.
In response to this, all Local Authorities who from now on, exceed
these targets will be fined £150 per tonne for every tonne that
exceeds those targets. To find our more go to

Household Waste Recycling Sites are also run by Cumbria
County Council. There are three sites within Allerdale:
- Syke Road, Wigton - open Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun - 8.00 - 6.00
- Solway Road, Workington open every day 8.00 - 6.00
- Glasson Ind Estate, Maryport open Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun 8.00 -
4.00
These sites are for residents to recycle and dispose of domestic
waste only.
There is now a permit scheme in operation on these sites which
you will have to obtain if you are a domestic resident and drive a
van, pick-up, or flatbed or tow a large trailer.
Commercial/trade customers are not permitted to use
these sites and will not be issued permits to enter the
sites.
