Recycling - general information .jpg)
Allerdale Borough Council, in partnership with
Focsa Services, is responsible for the collection and recycling of
household waste from across the Borough.
Allerdale Borough Council, like all other
English Authorities were set recycling targets by the
Government through the Waste Strategy 2000.
Our current recycling rate stands at a
massive 37%, which means an increase in recycling rate of 12% since
the beginning of 2007. This exceeds the set
target of 25%.
We are proud of the progress Allerdale
residents have made so far. The introduction and expansion of
the 3 bin recycling scheme has shown a commitment by Allerdale
residents to manage the waste we produce in a more sustainable way
and reduce our dependency on landfill. Currently the ‘three-bin’
recycling collection service is offered to around 37,000 of
Allerdale’s 44,000 properties, some of these properties in the most
rural parts of the borough.
Unfortunately due to the larger size of the
vehicles required to make this type of recycling collection it may
not be possible to reach every single property in the borough with
a kerbside recycling collection, although we will endeavour to
extend our kerbside recycling schemes wherever possible. To get
around this we are continuing to expand our provision of communal
recycling facilities to the most rural areas of the borough.
Currently there are almost 300 community
recycling bring sites of various
sizes throughout the Borough where residents can take items to
be recycled.
Our newest kerbside recycling scheme,
‘the purple bag scheme’ currently offers
kerbside collections of glass, metal cans and plastic bottles to
around 15,000 properties. The aim is to roll this type of
collection out to a further 13,000 properties in the next year.
This roll out will also allow us to make
better use of the communal recycling facilities from areas that now
have the advantage of kerbside recycling collections. Communal
recycling facilities will be relocated to areas that up until now
we have been unable to reach with communal recycling
facilities.
For more information on what materials we
collect and how it is recycled please see our how is waste recycled page.
