SustainabilitySustainable development

Sustainability and sustainable development are vitally important to the current and future health of our environment, economy and standard of living.

Sustainability is the responsible and forward thinking use of our resources to ensure that they aren't used up at a faster rate than they can be replenished. In this way, we can provide a better quality of life for future generations as well as our own. Sustainable development means improving living standards, usually through economic growth, and at the same time protecting and conserving the environment.

We can all contribute in lots of ways, including being energy efficient and minimising the waste we produce through careful consumption and recycling. Examples of sustainable development on a larger scale include renewable energy schemes and the re-use of old industrial brownfield sites for commercial building developments.
