Environmental crimeLitter bin

Any action that has a negative effect on our environment and surroundings is considered an environmental crime. They affect the whole community.

The visual impact of environmental crimes, such as litter in the streets and graffiti on buildings, can alter the perception people have of the area, devaluing property and encouraging more criminal activity. There is a direct link between the state of the environment we live in and our overall happiness.

Environmental crime includes:Spot the Grot 1

  • Abandoned vehicles - dumping unwanted vehicles on highway or private land
  • Dog fouling - failure of an owner to clean up their dogs faeces immediately
  • Fly posting - the act of placing advertising posters or flyers in legal or illegal places
  • Fly tipping - dumping private or commercial waste on private or communal land
  • Graffiti - spray painting or marking property
  • Litter - deliberately dropping litter in streets and open spaces

Environmental crime is socially unacceptable and Allerdale Borough Council is committed to tackling this problem through education programmes and awareness campaigns. You can help us by reporting issues.

  • The Council is aware of several 'hotspot' areas within the Borough, particularly for litter and dog fouling and undertakes regular enforcement activity to visit problem areas. If necessary we can issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) to offenders
  • The Council's Street Scene Team is working with our waste and cleansing contractor to tackle this issue
  • The Council is visiting local schools to raise awareness of the problems caused by environmental crime through education

Raising awareness

The Council in partnership with the Times and Star newspaper is running a series of articles highlighting environmental crime; copies of the articles are available to view here.
