Healthy Menu AwardsHealthy Menu Award

A Healthy Menu Award is open to all food businesses and encourages the availability of wholesome low sugar, low salt, low fat food choices including:

Why is the Healthy Menu Award important?

  • Customers can make healthier and more informed food choices when ordering
  • As a caterer you have an important role influencing the eating habits of your customers
  • Healthy choices may help to reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease, obesity, strokes and cancer

How to qualify for an award?

To qualify for an award a food business must:

  • Maintain a satisfactory level of food hygiene. This is reflected by businesses achieving a rating of 3, 4 or 5 in the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme
  • Provide healthier food choices – these should be available every day and healthier techniques and ingredients should be incorporated into the general catering practice

The award is open to all food businesses, for example sandwich shops, takeaways, restaurants, cafes, public houses, hotels, clubs, canteens, leisure and community centres.

Use the menu checklist at the bottom of the page to see if you meet all the criteria for the award. All relevant criteria must be met (please note some points may not apply to all businesses; if it does not apply tick N/A). Return these to us at  the address/email shown on the left of the page.

There is also further advice on how to improve your menu.

What happens next?

We'll contact you to arrange a time to visit the premises.

Applications can be made all year and existing awards will be checked as part of your food hygiene inspection. Random menu checks may be carried out to check criteria between inspections. If the Award criteria are not being met the Award will be withdrawn.
