Vulcan Park, Workington
Vulcan Park is a 14 acre town centre park
situated in the centre of Workington on Vulcan’s Lane. The bulk of
the land now known as Vulcan Park was purchased by Workington
Corporation in 1908 and after being used as allotment gardens
during the First World War it was formally opened as the first
public park in Workington on June 4th, 1925 by Alderman J
McMullen.
Today the park remains a valued amenity
and is used by the local community for relaxation and recreation as
well as a variety of events and activities throughout the year.
Improvements to the park throughout 2008-2011 resulted in the Green
Flag Award being received in 2009 and retained in 2010.
Facilities
Vulcan Park encompasses areas of open space,
formal and informal sports and activites, and formal gardens.
Facilities available in Vulcan Park include:
- A bowling green and bower
- A playing pitch with goal posts
- Vulcan Park café and public toilets
- Vulcan Park Childrens' Play Area
- Cenotaph
- Park End Shelter (currently not in use)
- An outdoor gym for adults
Future plans for the park include extending
the age range of facilities available for the community, including
a MUGA and activities for teenagers and the recently
installed outdoor gym for adults. Allerdale Borough Council is
also nominating to protect part of the park under the Fields in
Trust Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields scheme.
These improvements will be carried out as
funding becomes available. If you want to help with this, or with
decisions made about our park please feel free to join
our friends group.
How do I get there?
There are good transport links with public
transport easily accessible. Workington train station is a 5-10
minute walk west of the park and the main bus terminal for
Workington is less than 5 minutes walk to the
north-east. A bus stop is also situated directly outside the main
entrance to the park.
Although there is no public vehicular access
into the park, parking is available on the roads surrounding the
park, Park Lane, Vulcan’s Lane, Princess Street and Fleet Street,
which is a mixture of unrestricted and disc parking.
Join us
We are currently looking for volunteers to form a
friends group for the park. Friends groups are essential for
breathing new life into parks and open spaces, assisting with input
into management plans, raising funding through grants and in some
cases assisting with tasks such as weeding and creating/ planting
new beds.
If you are interested in taking part, meeting new
friends or even just having a say in the future of our parks and
open spaces please contact the parks department by phoning
01900 702 702 or emailing parks.development@allerdale.gov.uk.

Tree planting for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee
Allerdale Borough Council has received 420 trees from the
Woodland
Trust to help with their ambition of
planting 6 million trees in celebration of the Queen's Diamond
Jubilee. On the 29th February 2012 a mixture of Hawthorn and
Rowan trees were planted in Vulcan Park with the help of
The National Trust and volunteers, participating in this
nation-wide event.
The National Trust Volunteers and community volunteers have also
helped by planting a small wildflower meadow just beyond the main
entrance gate to the park. This trial bed will be monitored and if
successful we will be looking to intorduce other wildflower beds
into the park.
Allerdale Borough Council would like to thank
the National Trust and volunteers for their assistance,
and enjoyed working with them on this activity. If you would
like to assist us or help form a Friends Group for Vulcan Park
please get in touch.
