Rules for Recycling Plasterboard, Plaster and Gypsum
Wastes
On 1 April 2009 the Environment Agency altered its guidance for
the management of waste plasterboard, plaster and gypsum. The
guidance states that plasterboard, plaster and gypsum waste should
be collected separately and sent for recovery.
This does not affect plaster attached to other waste, bricks for
example, however, it does affect plaster mixed with other waste. So
if plaster is not attached to other waste it should be segregated
before being deposited at a Household Waste Recycling Centre
(HWRC).
This change has been made to encourage additional recycling of
these materials. In addition, if these wastes are landfilled with
other waste types they can degrade, producing an odorous gas.
Due to the number of different containers required it is not
possible to provide a separate container for these wastes at all
Household Waste Recycling Centres. Your nearest sites with suitable
facilities are:
- Flusco HWRC near Penrith
- Project Furness HWRC, Barrow in Furness
Details of these sites can be found at recycleforcumbria.org
