Housing Associations (now known as Registered Providers), and
councils have changed the way they let properties.
The Cumbria Choice Website has been live since 12 May 2011 and
you are now able to apply on line to register for social
housing. Please use the link below.
The 6 Cumbrian Local Authorities and 8 Housing
Organisations have worked together to develop a new way of letting
their properties which will give more choice to local people
needing social rented housing. The 8 housing organisations are;
Derwent & Solway; Eden Housing; Home Housing; Impact Housing;
Accent Housing; Riverside; Two Castles, South Lakes Arms Length
Management Organisation.
Allerdale Borough Council no longer possesses
any housing stock but retains an interest through its Homelessness
duty. Whilst the new scheme will not increase the number of
homes available, Cumbria Choice provides a more transparent
way of letting homes, as well as giving people more choice where
they would prefer to live.
Under choice based lettings
customers only need to complete one application form to access
the properties of all the providers, with the exception of
Westfield Housing association who are not currently a partner in
the scheme.
Housing associations advertise their
properties through the scheme and customers can then choose the
homes for which they want to be considered. The scheme works on
a banding system. Priority will still be given to those with a
local connection. However 10% of properties will be made available
to people to move across Local Authority areas.
