Housing Associations in Allerdale
Anchor Trust is the largest provider in England of housing and
care services for older people. It has been providing accommodation
and support services to older people for over 30 years and has
developed a range of complimentary services including sheltered
housing for rent and sale, residential homes and nursing
homes, home care and home improvements and adaptations. The
services are tailored to meet the needs of the elderly person, such
as adapting current homes to better meet needs or finding out about
moving to more suitable accommodation. As a not-for-profit
organisation, Anchor's charges are set to meet the costs of
providing and developing services and it can often help to get
benefits and grants to pay for these services.

Derwent and Solway Housing Association opened for business in
Allerdale in March 1999 but it has a heritage that goes back to the
turn of the century. Derwent and Solway inherited both the social
housing developed over the years by Allerdale Borough Council and
the expertise in managing rented housing gained from those years of
experience. It has a network of local housing offices and has made
a commitment to invest millions of pounds over the next few years
in the housing it owns. Although Derwent and Solway has a local
management board which includes among its members four tenants and
four local councillors, it benefits from being a member of the
Harvest Housing Group, one of Britain's fastest growing and most
diverse providers of rented homes.

Eden Housing Association brings a wealth of regeneration and
rural housing expertise to Allerdale. The team gained years of
experience managing homes as part of Eden District Council before
becoming a housing association in 1997. They work very closely with
Westfield Housing Association who manage many of their homes in
Allerdale. Eden is Allerdale Borough Council's housing partner for
the Regeneration Maryport project.
Eden also manage properties on behalf of Mitre Housing
Association, a small local organisation which provides homes in
Allerdale and Carlisle.
Home Housing Association has been providing homes in Allerdale
for over 60 years and now has approximately
3,800 properties throughout the borough. It has a team of
estate based housing officers and technical staff, supported by
specialists such as a Welfare Benefits Officer, for advice and
guidance on housing benefit; a Rent Arrears Controller, who
provides help in managing money and avoiding rent arrears; a
Tenancy Enforcement Officer, who works with the community to make
sure everyone can enjoy their homes in peace and quiet and a
Community Development Worker, who works alongside local people to
develop and sustain the spirit of community. As well as investing
in its housing, Home also provides substantial support to groups of
people with common interests such as the elderly and young people.
Much of this specialist support is provided by their special needs
division, Stonham Housing Association.

Over thirty years ago Housing 21 pioneered the development of
sheltered accommodation to provide companionship and a safe and
pleasant environment for older people. Housing 21 works with both
active and frail older people to encourage an independent
lifestyle. Accommodation is in the form of either compact studio
flats or one bedroom apartments with the support of a Resident
Court Manager backed up with an emergency call system. Weekly rents
cover the cost of all the services provided to the Court, including
the Resident Manager service, garden maintenance, window cleaning,
use of a communal lounge and laundry and a concessionary television
licence. The weekly charge is also currently eligible for Housing
Benefit to assist those with a low income.
Impact Housing Association works solely in Cumbria, being
founded in Cleator Moor in 1975. It manages over 2,300 homes
throughout the County and has offices in Carlisle and Penrith as
well as in Workington and Salterbeck in Allerdale. Impact prides
itself on maintaining all its properties in good condition and has
some of the lowest rents in the region. It has adopted choice base
lettings to allocate properties. This provides greater
choice for people to find property - more information is
available on their website. Impact houses people with a
range of needs - families, single people and elderly persons
as well as people with additional support needs. However, Impact
sees its role as being much more than a traditional landlord. It
believes it has a responsibility to communities where it works and
is involved in a number of community ventures to improve local
communities and create employment opportunities.
Two Castles Housing Association is a well established provider
of rented homes, with its roots and origins firmly based in
Cumbria. We aim to address the needs of individuals and families as
well as the needs of the wider community. We react positively to
the changing needs of our tenants and always try to offer rehousing
options in line with their changed circumstances. As we have more
applications than we have properties to let, we use a simple points
system to ensure that our homes are offered to those in the
greatest need. It is also our policy to offer equal opportunities
to all applicants, regardless of race, religion, colour, ethnic
origin, sexual orientation or marital status.
Westfield Housing Association was established in
1950 to provide housing for key workers coming to Workington for
employment in the iron and steel industry. When the British Steel
Corporation withdrew from direct provision of housing, in the early
1980s, the Association registered with the Housing Corporation as
an independent body. Since then, Westfield has built around 100 new
homes and, in 1993 following a successful ballot of Allerdale
Borough Council tenants in Westfield, accepted 223 homes from the
Council. Westfield which operates solely within Allerdale - has
since expanded its service beyond its own housing stock, offering a
management service to private landlords and a maintenance service
to home owners.
