Why Allerdale needs a Housing Strategy

Allerdale Borough Council wants Allerdale to be a great place to live. That means as many people as possible should have a decent home.

Allerdale Borough Council believes that any Housing Strategy should focus on housing as homes. Our most recent five-year Allerdale Housing Strategy was first published in late 1999. However, during 2005, we started working with the Cumbria Housing Group to develop a single 'Fit for Purpose' Housing Strategy for the whole of Cumbria. This new strategy which will be the first of its kind in Britain will help make sure that all of Cumbria's housing markets, providers and policies are working together to increase the opportunities for everyone in Cumbria to find a decent home for themselves and their family. The Cumbria Housing Strategy will help us...

  • Identify the planning allocations, decided regionally, for the number of new homes that can be built in Cumbria.
  • With the housing investment decisions made by the Regional Housing Board - the Board's decisions decide how much money local councils and housing associations can spend improving housing in Cumbria...
  • With the development of Supporting People.  Funds for these important services are always in short supply especially in a large, sparsely populated rural area like Cumbria. Working together can achieve the critical mass necessary to provide better services.
  • Make sure that housing markets support the economic development of Cumbria...

Property Services - HouseThe Cumbria Housing Strategy was published in November 2006 but before then the Cumbria Housing Group's Housing Strategy Task Group chaired by Allerdale Housing Services discussed with as many people and organisations as possible what type of housing is needed in the future for Cumbria. You can contact the group by e-mailing housing.services@allerdale.go.uk.

To access a copy of the Cumbria Housing Strategy visit the Impact Housing website.

Allerdale Housing Strategy has been superseded by the Cumbria Housing Strategy.   However, the work Allerdale carried out on the local strategy will be used to create a full Allerdale Housing Statement. You can download a summary of that piece of work, prepared as part of our contribution to the Cumbria Housing Strategy Group.

The Cumbria Housing Statement was updated in July 2006, it was Cumbria's contribution to the North West regional Housing Strategy. It followed the lead set by the Cumbria Strategic Partnership's Sustainable Cumbria plan for the development of the new Cumbrian economy and forms the basis of the Cumbria Housing Strategy.

You can download the background Briefing Paper for Allerdale's Balanced Housing Market Assessment for your parish below.

The spreadsheets in this section contain the identified housing need for each parish.  At the start of the survey process parishes were grouped together and the results have been similarly grouped in the spreadsheets.

In the past, the Housing Market Assessments have been conducted using median income and median house prices. However the practice guidance that sets out the framework for local authorities to follow to assess the housing market and to assess housing need and demand suggests that lower quartile house prices and lower quartile incomes should be used. Therefore taking this into account, all the Housing Market Assessments have been updated.

Data in the spreadsheets is correct as at August 2010.
