Arts and Education

Allerdale Borough Council Arts Development Service is engaged in Arts and Education through:

  • Partnerships with organisations delivering work in this sector
  • Building an education element into all projects
  • Sitting on steering groups to support key arts in education programmes and initiatives

The Allerdale Arts Fund will support and fund arts in education work. We accept applications from schools, colleges and universities as well as artists wishing to work in this sector.

Artsmark

Artsmark is a national accreditation scheme managed by Arts Council England that recognises schools with a high level of provision in the arts. The scheme is open to all schools in England - primary, secondary, special schools and pupil referral units, both maintained and independent. There are currently ten schools in Allerdale with an Artsmark award. For more information visit the Artsmark website.

Creative Partnerships is the Government's flagship creativity programme for schools and young people, managed by Arts Council England and funded by the DfES (Department for Education and Skills) and the DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport). Creative Partnerships is focused on the most deprived communities in the UK. They work with schools, aiming to unlock the creativity of educators and learners, and develop creative approaches to teaching all aspects of the curriculum. Cumbria Arts in Education was established in 1992 to promote and develop the availability of high quality arts experiences to the young people of Cumbria with equal opportunities for all. They provide funding, training and advice to help schools and other education providers who want to collaborate with professional artists. A new website including a directory of artists with skills in working with young people will be available in Autumn 2006. Artists can find out about joining the directory or the Open Grants funding programme by contacting Kate Morgan at Cumbria Arts in Education.

The Excellence Cluster Cultural Strand

The Cultural Strand of the West Cumbria Excellence Cluster provides schools with a service to enable a wide range of arts and cultural activities and educational opportunities to take place in schools. There are currently fifteen cluster schools throughout Allerdale and Copeland. The Excellence Cluster was established in 2001. Schools in Allerdale in the Excellence Cluster are: Beckstone Primary School, Distington Community Primary School, Ellenborough and Ewanrigg Infant School, Ewanrigg Junior School, Grasslot Infant School, Maryport Infant School, Netherhall School and Specialist Sports College, Southfield Technology College, St. Mary's RC Primary School and Westfield Nursery and Primary School.
