Solway Arts is a voluntary charity promoting professional arts for the public in Allerdale. Their wide-ranging programme includes events throughout Allerdale, including poetry readings as well as shows by a number of reputable theatre companies, puppet shows, art and craft exhibitions, and jazz and classical concerts.


Words by the Water: A Cumbrian Literature Festival

Words by the Water was established in 2002 as a celebration of books, writing, words and ideas. Organised by Ways With Words, the festival features a varied programme of readings by authors and poets, writing workshops, study groups, discussion and family events. The festival is normally held in March.

Cockermouth Writers Circle

Cumbrian Literary Group

Cumbrian Poets

Meets once a month, usually on the last Friday, where poets discuss critically and give feedback on one poem from each participant.

Senhouse Writers Group

Workington Writing Group

This small informal group meets on Wednesdays 10am - 12noon, term time only, at Harrington Youth Club. Members of the group are interested in reading and discussing a wide variety of different writing. The group are currently working on a set of memoirs which they hope will be published, although new members are welcomed. Membership costs £4 a week.
