Local history and heritage
Allerdale has a fascinating history and heritage with
a broad range of influences including Roman, maritime
and mining. Within Allerdale there are many historic
towns and villages and 20 conservation areas outside of the Lake
District national park area. Around 1500 buildings in Allerdale are
listed as being of special architectural or historic interest.
Keswick Museum is a purpose built
victorian museum featuring a collection that tells the story of the
history of Keswick and the surrounding areas of the Lake District
with a particular focus on natural sciences. Jane Pit, a 19th century coal mine situated at
Workington, is a scheduled ancient monument.
