Heritage Outreach
Schools Visits
We welcome school visits to each of the museum sites,
although the service and facilities that we are able to offer
varies from site to site. We are currently without a dedicated
member of staff to facilitate visits so please make contact with
the individual sites prior to your visit using the contact details
elsewhere on the website (Museums and
galleries). All visits must be prebooked.
What can we offer?
- The permanent and temporary displays at the
three museums can help with art, history and science in the
national curriculum on several levels. Equally the theme of local
history is accessible at all of the museums and heritage
sites.
- We can sometimes arrange for the loan of
artefacts for school based projects, or for use in the
museums.
- Information Sheets: Sites have information
sheets on a variety of subjects that are available on request.
- Workshops with facilitators: we can arrange for
experienced staff to work with your class or group on specific
subjects in the sites. A charge will be made for this service.
- On site Facilities: An Education room at the
Helena Thompson Museum and Keswick Museum and Art Gallery enable
schools to have pre or post visit sessions and provides somewhere
to eat packed lunches.
- Guided Tours: tours for school groups are
available at the museums
- All general school visits are currently free,
although this may be subject to alteration
- A variety of services can be offered to students
studying in related fields at both further and higher education
levels, including placements and visits.
Other Group visits
Museum staff can give general and specialised talks to
groups and organisations on request. This activity is co-ordinated
by the Heritage and Arts Unit Office. Talks range from general
introductions to the Service as a whole, the Arts Development
Service, the collections held in the Heritage Service, or on the
individual Museums. These talks can be arranged free of charge, but
must be prebooked.
Staff can also make visits off site which usually take the form
of talks illustrated with slides on the subjects listed above.
Tours can be arranged of the three museums. A charge for this
service applies outside normal opening times.
Exhibition programme
The Service runs a temporary exhibition programme at Keswick
Museum and the Helena Thompson Museum. We always welcome proposals
for exhibitions from members of the community, and at the Helena
Thompson Museum an exhibition committee exists to plan the
programme.
