Parks and open spaces
There are a
great number and variety of parks and open spaces in Allerdale
including nature reserves and town parks with a range of leisure
and sports facilities. Descriptions of many parks and open
spaces as well as links to location maps can be found
below. Alternatively, you can view the locations of the

Curwen Park
Curwen Park is situated on the edge of town and
is a very pleasant rural retreat. It is well known for its
impressive Tudor hall where Mary Queen of Scots once stayed, and
the park has other historic connections. Here are woodland and
riverside walks, the "Green House" community and educational
facility, and sports pitches. All of this is just a short stroll
from the town centre.
Vulcan Park, Workington
Vulcan Park is a more traditional town centre
park. Facilities here include a large equipped children's play
area, a café, bowling green and tennis courts.
Harris Park, Cockermouth
Harris Park combines the attractions of a
traditional town park with the countryside. As well as children's
playgrounds, tennis courts, putting and bowling, there are woodland
and riverside walks. It is possible to walk here via the
Cockermouth Greenway from the town centre. The public footpath
leading out of the park along the River Cocker provides walkers
with a wonderful entry into the Lake District via the Vale of
Lorton.
The Green, Silloth
This is a large and unique area of coastal
parkland with extensive open space, pinewoods, and fine views
across to the Scottish hills. Facilities include a crazy golf
course, a paddling pool and pleasant landscaped sitting
areas.
Siddick Pond, Workington
Siddick Pond is the first of two Local Nature
Reserves (LNR'S) in the Workington area. It is a wetland habitat
very popular with wildfowl and other species.
Harrington Nature Reserve
Harrington Nature Reserve is the second of
Workington's LNR's. This takes the form of a wooded valley and old
reservoir which is very popular with wildlife. Both these reserves
can be visited.
