Rugby League Four Nations Four Nations comes to Workington!

Due to the huge success of the two World Cup games held in 2013, and the following European Championship games, the RFL brought another of their high profile competitions to the borough with support from Allerdale Borough Council and partners BEC and the NDA.

New Zealand played Scotland in the second round of the Four Nations competition on the 11th November 2016 at Derwent Park.

The Allerdale community are big fans of the Scottish team, and were chuffed at the final result, 18 - 18 against one of the top teams in the world, undoubtedly, there was a disappointed New Zealand squad.

  • Thousands of people took to the streets of Workington for a spectacular theatre performance and the town’s two matches of the Rugby League World Cup 2013. The March to the Match saw giant stilt-walking creatures lead a procession of torch-carrying spectators through the town centre, before a firework display lit up the sky at Brow Top.  During the day, pop-up opera wowed shoppers and visiting fans alike, crowds were entertained by schoolchildren and dancers from across West Cumbria, as well as the RLWC 2013 Choir and the final part of the RLWC cultural programme took place at the Carnegie Theatre on Sunday 3 November with a fantastic performance of La Bohème.

  • On the pitch, it was a great week for the Scotland squad too. They beat Tonga 26-24 in the first game and drew 30 - 30 with Italy at Derwent Park, which helped put them on their way to the Quarter finals against New Zealand - they put up a fantastic fight but couldn't get more than 4 points against one of the tournaments top teams, who eventually lost in the final to favourites, Australia.

  • The RLWC 2013 cultural programme was organised by Allerdale Borough Council, in partnership with the Carnegie Theatre, Lakes Alive, Rosehill on the Road, Soundwave, Arts North, and Copeland Community Fund. The main sponsors of the RLWC 2013 in Workington are Allerdale Borough Council, Britain’s Energy Coast and Workington Town RLFC. Photos: Jim Davis
