Events

This is an exciting time for sport and physical activity in Allerdale. A new leisure centre in Workington opened in 2016 - what better time to start and think about getting involved in something new, fun, exciting? We are working with partners including Sport England to create and develop events and activities over the next 12 months to encourage people to give sport a go. The programme includes activities for the beginner, like the 2017 Festival of Running (2nd July 2017), to the more extreme athletes like the Lakesman long distance triathlon on the 18th June 2017, and everyone in between, including the HSBC Lets Ride program.

Workington Festival of Running 2017

This event was developed through a partnership between Allerdale Borough Council, GLL, CN Events and Cumberland Athletics club to give people of all running abilities the chance to get involved in a fun, friendly, safe running event over 1KM, 5KM and 10KM distances.
The first Workington FOR took place on the 3rd July 2016 with over 300 people taking part, it was such a success that we hope to make it an annual event, with it's family focus and 'open to anyone' philosophy. It's not about who wins and it's not only for elite runners, this is for anyone who wants to challenge themselves, whether you have just started out in one of the local learn to run groups this or are a hardened veteran but don't want to go any faster than your usual 14 minute mile.

This years event took place on the 2nd July 2017, starting from the new Workington Leisure Centre.

Lets Ride - on yer bike!

Allerdale Borough Council in partnership with Cumbria County Council, British Cycling and others is supporting a number of free group lead cycle rides across the Borough. Routes and distances vary to suit all abilities, and there's leaders on hand to help build confidence and set you off on your cycling journey. They're as much about meeting new people as they are about building bike confidence. All on nice quiets routes, many traffic free, take in the sights of the coast or fells with our fantastic group of volunteers.

The new summer programme will include routes in Keswick, Maryport, Workington or if you fancy going further a field, try some in Copeland or Carlisle. There are new rides being added all the time.

Become a Leader! There is also a FREE cycle leaders course taking place at the Wave Centre, on the 25th June - if you are interested in helping others to get back on their bikes then you can get more information and book your place at Letsride.

To book your place go to letsride.

Parkrun!

The parkrun takes place every Saturday morning in Workington and Keswick. Organised by local volunteers, it is a free 5km run starting at 9am. It's not a race, it is an event for every type of runner, whether or not it is part of your regular training programme or you are starting out on your running journey and this is the first step to complete parkrun. There is no time limit, no age limit and no registration. Just turn up and run!

parkrun volunteers help encourage people to take part in a healthy activity, that can be done with friends and family, young and old and at no cost. All you need to do is register once for a personal barcode then bring this along with you to the run. You can get all details and your barcode at the parkrun website: Workington parkrun Keswick parkrun
The run starts at 9am so please ensure you arrive in plenty of time, the routes go onto the cycle path to the parkrun turning point and back along the same path.
