Walking
Walking is a great form of physical activity which can enable
you to improve your health and fitness. Physical activity
positively contributes to the prevention and management of over 20
chronic diseases and conditions including coronary heart disease,
diabetes, cancer, mental health and obesity. Therefore, people
across Allerdale are being encouraged to get out and about in their
area and walk their way to better health. And with the some of
the most breathtaking scenery in the country, with the Lake
District in the south and the coastline stretching to the north,
this is an ideal place to get out and about and stay healthy.
Doorstep walks
Allerdale Borough Council is helping to make it as
easy as possible for people to get fit and healthy through walking.
Specially designed ‘doorstep walk’ guides have been created which
suggest simple walking routes in each of the towns int he
borough. All the suggested walking routes are are easily
accessible and follow good footpaths. The aim is to encourage
people to do at least 150 minutes of gentle exercise per week
to improve t
heir overall
health.
The walks vary in length and difficulty (although
none is too difficult!), depending on your health and
fitness levels. The shortest and easiest walk is St Michael's
Churchyard in Workington which is 0.8km (0.5 miles) and
will take approximately 7.5-15 minutes to complete. The
longest and slightly more difficult walks are Salterbeck Shore and
Furness Gill, Flimby, both of which are 2.4km (1.5 miles) and
will take approximately 20-45 minutes to complete.
Printable versions of all the walks are below.
Walking 4 Health - join a group!
Walking groups bring like minded people together who want to
walk their first steps to improve their health and achieve
their 150 minutes of physcial activity each week but maybe
don’t have the confidence to do it on their own or don't know where
to go.
Whatever your motive, you can walk at your own pace and we
always have time for a natter. Remember to bring a drink with you,
though some days we might even pop into a café.
