Cockermouth Leisure
Centre improvements
Allerdale Borough Council in partnership with Carlisle
Leisure Limited is carrying out a number of
improvements at the Allerdale leisure facilities. These
improvements are funded by business rates relief which
Carlisle Leisure Limited is able to achieve due to having
charitable trust status.
The use of these funds are jointly agreed by the partners
and to date have enabled a number of improvements to be made which
improve the quality of the facilities and increase the range of
activities available to users.
Swimming pool changing rooms
The old, original pool changing rooms were refurbished in
2006 and a new changing 'village' created which is much more
customer friendly. New lockers,
cubicles, toilets and showers have been fitted and new group,
family and disabled changing areas created.
A new ceiling has been fitted and the
changing room decorated, replacing the old bare brick walls and the
pool viewing area has been enlarged.
Fitness Suite
The fitness suite was refurbished in 2005 with the creation of a
new facility on the
ground floor and the installation of new equipment. A new
ceiling and air conditioning was fitted to provide a comfortable
environment for users to work out in.
Entrance foyer
The £1,000,000 scheme to
replace the original entrance foyer and provide new activity spaces
started in July 2007 and is now complete and open.
The picture to the right shows
the new reception desk. The foyer floor is green slate with
under floor heating.
The fitness suite extension has
a glass block wall to provide natural light and ensure privacy for
users. The area is also air conditioned and is fitted with
audio-visual equipment to provide a welcoming place to
exercise.
The project comprises a number
of elements which now
enables the
leisure centre to provide a wider range of activities to the local
community:
- A new entrance and reception
area.
- Larger customer waiting, seating and vending
areas.
- A new activity studio.
- Extended fitness suite.
- A new meeting room.
- An extended car park.
The extension to the car
park was completed in September 2007 with new spaces
created either side of the access road from St Helen's street and
new footpaths being formed to link to the new entrance to the
facility.
Martin Horne, Business Development Manager for Carlisle Leisure
says:
“We’re delighted to be able to be able to
provide an enhanced facility for the residents of Cockermouth and
it’s a great testimony to our partnership with Allerdale Borough
Council that so much has been invested in the facilities in such a
relatively short space of time. I’m sure the new building will be
very well received and supported.”
Peter Haley, Leisure Partnership Officer for Allerdale Borough
Council adds:
“This project will not only increase the
range and quality of facilities at Cockermouth Leisure Centre but
will hopefully encourage the local community to take part in
regular physical activity. There will be a vastly increased
programme available at the centre which will provide something for
all ages and interests.”
Opening Ceremony
The new facilities were officially opened on the 4th of
April 2008 by the Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Ron Munby, Karen
Bassett, Chair of Carlisle Leisure Management Board and Matthew
Wilson of the Ford World Rally team, M-Sport.
