Netherhall community sports development

Community Sports Development Worker

The post was established in Jan 2004 in a partnership between Netherhall School Specialist Sports College and Allerdale Borough Council.  The role continually evolves but has the main aim of increasing physical activity among all community members in Maryport and surrounding areas.  The role looks to create links between schools, clubs, Allerdale Borough Council, Cumbria Sport and other public and private sectors to ensure the sports college continues to impact on the community of Maryport.  The role is currently managed by Jenna Pooley.

“A key part of our philosophy is to do with the building of partnerships; with our students, with their families and with the wider community.  As a Specialist Sports College and an Extended School, our role at the hub of community activity is very important”.

David Sibbit
Head Teacher of Netherhall School Specialist Sports College.

Many of the activities are based from the Netherhall Community Sports Centre using the excellent facilities they have and making activities and clubs accessible for the community, we also base activities at Silloth in their fantastic Sports Hall, it is brilliant for any activity we are providing.

Through the partnership of the Allerdale Sports Development Officer, Community Sports Development Worker, Coaches and Facility Providers there are plenty of activities coming up for everyone, if you haven’t already been taking part!

Whats going on?

FOOTBALL

We have run a programme covering the multi-skills of football as an introductory to the basic skills for 4 to 8 year olds.  This course has run for 6 weeks and the same children attend for the whole of the course.  The long term aim is to build up different age groups and bring them through the ranks of Football and the local Leagues and work on Football development in the area with the facilities we have.  This is also looking to expand on older children from ages 8-12 open to everyone but with an aim to target children who do not already play for clubs but want to play football.

HALF TERM AND HOLIDAY CAMPS

So far we have ran two half term activity camps : The camps run for four days and involve physical activity and fun for 4-7 year olds (1st two days) and 8-11 year olds (2nd two days).  Overall we had 28 kids participating, doing activities over the October half term week and in the February half term there was a massive increase in the number of children participating to 45! The feedback from the kids and parents was fantastic and fun was everywhere, it’s a really good way to keep active and not get board through half term!  The next one will be run in the Easter Holidays for further information please ring Netherhall Community Sports Centre on 01900 813434 option 3!

BURN AND TONE

The Community Sports Development Worker and Netherhall Community Sports Centre have worked together to create a brilliant session for anyone who wants to get fit and tone up whilst having a really good time.  The session includes various fitness regimes including different Exercise to Music sessions, a mix of Cardio Vascular exercises, light Toning and Abdominal workouts, which will have you looking & feeling great in no time! This class is on Thursday evenings from 6pm -7pm and costs only £3!  For more information please call Ryan on 01900 813434 (option 3) or Jenna on 07706 741 248.
