Sports Development

About Us

Allerdale Borough Council, Sport and Recreation Unit provides opportunities for people to participate in sport and recreation through its parks and open spaces, sports and leisure centres, sports pitches, recreation grounds and public halls. The Sports Development Team works in partnership to contribute towards improving the health and wellbeing of local communities through a range of physical activity and sports initiatives.
We aim to provide advice and support to local community clubs and groups in their development. The team is able to provide a variety of sports related information to assist the development process. This may include coach education courses, volunteering opportunities and funding information.
The key sports development performance targets for 2008/2009 are:
  • Continued involvement in the Cumbria Sports Partnership and networking with local sports clubs, Governing Bodies of Sport and other relevant agencies.
  • Co-ordinate Allerdale's participation in the Cumbria Youth Games in 10 sports.
  • Work with partners to organise a summer recreation scheme for young people.
  • Provide a Coach Education programme to support clubs and coaches in their development.
  • Work with Netherhall Specialist Sports College to provide activities in and around the Maryport Area.
  • Provide a support and enabling role for club and community group development
  • Act as a consultee for the Authority in relation to the National Lottery Sports Fund
In order to deliver the key performance targets the Council has advanced its enabling role by developing community links, networks and systems in order to extend sport and recreation opportunities throughout Allerdale.
