National Bike Week 2008
14th - 22nd June
This years National Bike Week saw a full programme of
events taking place within Allerdale and Copeland and unfortunately
a lot of rain but it didnt stop people getting out and about on
their bikes!
Here's what we got up to in Allerdale:
Saturday 14th - One of the 'Do in a Day' routes
leaving from Silloth Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty headed out
towards Abbeytown on the Hadrians Wall Cycle route, covering about
7 miles. Was great for the beginners on the quiet, country
roads.
Wednesday 18th - Evening beginners Mountain
bike ride round Ennerdale Water, in torrential rain but this was a
fantastic event, riding amongst the low clouds and between the
trees was an exhilarating feeling.
Friday 20th - Evening ride leaving from Workington
Sports Centre along the cycle paths around Siddick pond.
Other events included taster rides from Netherhall Sports Centre
and the Minto Centre in Workington, A ride along the cycle paths
from Whitehaven Leisure Centre and a 'Do in a Day' ride from
Egremont.

Cycling for Health
These are exciting times for cyclists in Allerdale! Nikki
Campbell is the Cycling for Health Co-ordinator for North Cumbria
covering Allerdale, Copeland, Carlisle and Eden. Nikki will be
promoting the health and social benefits of getting back on your
bike and out down the roads and lanes of North Cumbria!
Since being in post Nikki has organised a full timetable of
events starting from February 2008, she has put 12 keen cycling
volunteers through their cycle leader training and provided some
refresher days for those who haven't been on their bikes for
years or never been on one before to build up their confidence
cycling on the roads. These were a great success and there are
plans for more in the future. If you would like more
information on either cycle training or refresher days then contact
