Learn and develop new skills and help your community
As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to learn new skills
specific to the volunteer role. In addition, you will have the
chance to develop skills such as communication, interpersonal and
organisational skills, decision making and time management.
There are a number of volunteer projects that are available to
assist you such as Adults Other Than Teachers, Step into Sport,
Active in Cumbria, Millennium Volunteers and Sport England
Volunteer Investment Programme.
Adults other than Teachers
What is AOTT's? AOTT's is a beginner course for adults with
no coaching or teaching qualifications and is aimed at volunteers
and aspiring coaches who wish to assist a class teacher in the
delivery of physical education and/or out-of-school sports
activities. All AOTTs should work under the supervision of a
teacher and should never be left on their own with a group.
- The contents of the course include:
- An introduction to the PE curriculum
- Benefits of PE
- Organisation of class and group work to assist
learning
- Management of safe practice, behaviour etc.
- What you could do next
Each participant will receive a resource pack valued at £35
Containing:
- A set of TOPs resource cards
- A Cumbria Sport T-Shirt
- The Cumbria Sport Directory
- Information about sports opportunities in your
locality
- A certificate of attendance
The AAOTS course is under review at the moment but for more

Step into Sport
What is Step into Sport (SIS)?
Step into Sport is a leadership and volunteering project for young
people aged 14 - 25. SIS has been designed to offer a simple
framework of coordinated opportunities at a local level. Allerdale
Borough Council is working in conjunction with Cumbria Sport and
Netherhall Specialist Sports College to introduce the Step into
Sport Leadership and Volunteering Programme. What will volunteers
gain from SIS?
- Access to additional training in leadership and
coaching (£50 is available for courses and NGB
qualifications)
- Receive a nationally recognised certificate
- Recognition through Step into Sport awards
- An opportunity to learn and obtain new skills
and experiences.
- Volunteers will receive goodies for
reaching 50, 100, 150 & 200 hours (includes fleeces, sweaters,
whistles, stop watches, bags and water bottles.
How can volunteers get involved?
Volunteers will be referred to the Step into Sport programme
through their Community Sport Leader Award (CSLA) course tutor,
club coach or school teacher. For more information on this event

How can Sports clubs/organisations get involved?
If a club or organisation would like to offer an opportunity to a
volunteer and can meet the following criteria, they need to fill in
a Step into Sport registration form. These are available from
Cumbria Sport. The criteria are:
- The organisation must have a child protection
policy
- The Coach(s) must have a minimum of a Level 1
coaching qualification
- The organisation must identify a volunteer
co-ordinator who will be responsible for supporting the
volunteers.
Each club that takes on a Step into Sport
volunteer will receive £50 for each one (they can have up to
6).
