ADA Access Group Information
The

Allerdale Disability Association was originally formed in
1976 as an Access group run by local volunteers with a variety of
disabilities to try and improve the quality of life for all
disabled people within Allerdale. Our trained voluntary Access
officers have worked closely with Allerdale Borough Council's
Access officer and the County Highways Department since then, by
assessing buildings, facilities and general accessibility
throughout the area. Visit the
Allerdale Disability Association
website.
We produced the original Access
guides for each of the major towns within Allerdale covering places
to visit, hotel and guest house accommodation, eating out, sports,
recreational activities and shopping areas. We have been pleased to
assist Allerdale Borough Council whenever possible to provide this
new guide which will be of great benefit to all disabled people in
our area and to the many visitors with disabilities.
We offer advice and information on
all matters of accessibility and over the years have built up a
considerable resource of information. Each month, meetings of the
group are held to report findings, discuss actions to be taken and
detail plans to improve our service.
Over the year, following our own
site visits and recommendations, we select three recipients for
Access Awards who have provided new or improved facilities to
assist disabled people with access and enjoyment of the services,
entertainment provided.
Government legislation now requires
services to provide equal access for people with disabilities.
Consequently the work-load of our group is ever increasing, and we
would be particularly delighted to hear from new volunteers
throughout Allerdale to assist us to achieve our goals of "Access
for All".
