Open Space Study and Playing Pitch Strategy

The Allerdale Open Space and Sport and Recreation Strategies consist of integrated documents including the Open Space Study and the Playing Pitch Strategy.  These documents form up to date assessments of the need for open space, sports and recreation facilities, identifying, mapping and cataloguing each asset by type such as indoor sports, outdoor sports, amenity space, church yards/cemeteries, parks and gardens, and allotments etc. Specific requirements in terms of the Borough's quantitative and qualitative provision and future requirements are identified within these assessments, and will inform Council decisions on priorities for improvement of provision.

The Following two reports provide an evidence base to help inform the future provision for open spaces in Allerdale.

  • The Open Space Assessment Report provides detail with regard to what provision exists in Allerdale, its condition, distribution and overall quality. It also considers the demand for provision based on population distribution, planned growth and consultation findings.
  • The Open Space Standards Paper follows on from the Assessment Report. It focuses on reporting the findings of the research, consultation, site assessments, data analysis and GIS mapping that underpins the study. The evidence presented in this report should be used to inform local plan documents and supplementary planning documents. It sets an approach to securing open space facilities through new housing development and forms the basis for negotiation with developers for contributions towards the provision of appropriate open space facilities and their long term maintenance.

The sites referred to in the reports are available to view on the Council's mapping system using the 'My Maps' tab, selecting 'Show Map Categories' in the left hand side panel, choosing the 'Local Plan Consultation' tab from the list displayed, and clicking in the box for  'KPP Open Space Audit'.

The Playing Pitch Strategy provides a strategic framework for the maintenance and improvement of existing outdoor sports pitches and ancillary facilities between 2014 and 2019.
