Abandoned Vehicles

Abandoned carWe respond to complaints and representations regarding abandoned vehicles and initiate statutory action to secure their removal.

Reports from the public involving vehicles abandoned on the highway (or part of the highway, including the verge) should be made to the police who will initiate an investigation into the ownership and status of the vehicle. To report a vehicle to the police phone: 0845 33 00 247.

If their enquiries indicate that the vehicle may have been abandoned the police may contact the Council with a written request for action to secure its removal. The Council will make a decision on whether a vehicle is abandoned which will depend on the circumstances of the case.

Where a vehicle is considered by the Council to be abandoned the Council may affix a statutory notice to the vehicle or write to the last known keeper and on expiry of the stipulated time period the vehicle will be removed for storage or disposal. The Council will recover costs incurred in removing, storing and disposing of abandoned vehicles from the owner responsible. Burnt out vehicles will be dealt with in accordance with their status, i.e. stolen, abandoned.

Vehicles which are involved in road traffic accidents, broken down, causing an obstruction or are a danger to other road users are also the responsibility of the police.

Not having a current vehicle excise licence is not sufficient grounds to decide that a vehicle is abandoned. Such vehicles should be reported to the DVLA freephone telephone hotline 0800 032 5202 or email vehicles.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk.

If you wish to report a potentially abandoned vehicle to the Council please fill out the abandoned vehicle online form. Your name, address and contact details will be kept confidential by the Council. Other details about the vehicle will be communicated to the public and other relevant statutory agencies.
