Parking Services

Allerdale Borough Council provides a total of 2666 Public
Parking spaces throughout the Towns of
Allerdale. Of these:
- 2363 are 'Pay & Display'
- 7 are for Coaches
- 223 are 'Free'
- 43 are for Blue Badge Holders
- 34 are 'Reserved' for an Annual Fee
Of the 'Pay & Display' spaces 357 are limited to a
maximum stay of 2 or 3 hours. These are situated at 'Udale Street'
, 'Ladies Walk' car park(s) at Workington and 'Bell Close' Car Park
at Keswick (2 hours), and at Fairfield car park in Cockermouth (3
hours). The purpose for this is to provide an adequate turnover of
shopping amenity.
On the other 'Pay & Display' car parks users may stay for
much longer.
Half hour parking opportunities are available at 'Bell Close' and
'Central Car Park' at Keswick and at all Wigton Car Parks.
The Service also provides:-
- 4 Coach Bays at Lakeside - Keswick
- 3 Coach Bays at Wakefield Road - Cockermouth
- Strategically Placed, 'special' spaces for Disabled
Drivers.
- Free parking for all Blue Badge Holders in any normal
publicly available bay on any of its car parks - as well as in the
special disabled bays. (Please note Time Disc requirements)
- Season Tickets for Allerdale businesses and workers.
- Reserved bays, on an annual rental basis, at Workington and
Keswick generally for the benefit of small businessmen and
businesses.
- Hotel and Guest House concessions for use by visitors and
guests. It will consider applications for these by any bona-fide
tourism accommodation operator in any Town, (a fee is payable for
each 'guest' permit).
- 24 hour CCTV coverage on selected main parking areas, monitored
by the Cumbrian Constabulary - to be extended by an agreed
programme of works and central funding.
- Frequent Security and regulation patrols on all 'Pay &
Display' car parks during all charging hours.
There are over 2 million vehicle parking activities on
Allerdale's car parks in each year.
To enhance our effectiveness, and value for money, the service
also manages a number of other privately owned car parks in the
Borough and operates these under its Parking Places Order (as
amended). Regulation and Management of other car parks is performed
within existing resources.
Because we are effective, not only is there no 'cost' to any
local tax-payer but net 'income' is earned for the Council by the
Service.
Currently the Council uses that (net) income to help to fund
'other' services before any level of Council Tax is calculated.
Such 'other' services include, Museums, Sports & Leisure
Centres, Recreation grounds and Parks, grants to other
organisations - and much more.
Allerdale Policy
The Council provides and maintains public off-street car parks
in each of the towns of the Borough to ensure a safe and sufficient
parking amenity to meet the needs of the local community, local
economy, businesses and visitors.
It is the policy of the Council to charge for parking where it
is economic to do so, and to apply different levels of charges
according to the needs and the economy of each area. The council
also holds responsibility for the enforcement of On-Street regulations.
The purpose of charges is to enhance the utility of each parking
place, so as to provide the maximum number of parking
"opportunities" in each Town - commensurate with the needs of the
community, businesses and motorists, at no cost to the council tax
payer if possible.
All car parks are strictly but fairly regulated. It is Council
policy to penalise all improper use, or abuse, of it's limited
parking facilities to seek to ensure compliance, and maximum
availability of limited resources for other users.
Car parking fees can be found in the Council's list
of fees and charges by
selecting the car parks tab.
