About RSS feeds

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Also referred to as news feeds, RSS feeds provide a slimmed down version of a section of a website that can be viewed using a feed reader without having to visit the website.

RSS is useful for viewing frequently updated content such as news items and events. An RSS feed generally consists of the item headline, a short summary of the item and a link back to the complete news item on the website that the feed originated from.

About feed readers

RSS feed readers (or aggregators) are applications that display feeds from websites. They update frequently to display the latest version of the feed and can display feeds from a number of different websites. This provides a quick way to view a variety of news, events and articles from the websites you are interested in all in the same place.
Feed readers are built in to most web browsers, email applications such as Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird, and some portal websites including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Live.

How to subscribe to an RSS feed

When a feed is available for a section of content on our website, there will be a link to this page beside the relevant content, highlighted by an orange RSS icon. From this page, find the feed you are interested in (our feeds are listed above) then copy and paste the link of the feed into your feed reader, or drag it to your reader to subscribe. The subscription method may vary depending on the application you use so it is advisable to check the help section of your feed reader application for specific instructions.

Some browsers display the orange RSS icon in the browser tool bar when they find a feed on the page you are viewing. Clicking on this will allow you to view the feed and provide further instructions on how to subscribe.

RSS feeds from a website can also be displayed on other websites as headlines. Allerdale Borough Council supplies a variety of information in RSS XML feed format which can be used in this way. This service can be used by individuals and organisations for non-profit making purposes. Use of the above feeds is on the basis that the text content is presented unchanged from that contained in the RSS XML feed.

If you have any queries about using the service please contact webmaster@allerdale.gov.uk.
