Council Tax bandings

Each property has been placed into one of eight bandings according to its open market capital value at 1 April 1991. Therefore recent purchase prices are not necessarily the best evidence to use when appealing against your valuation band.

Your Council Tax bill says which band applies to your property. You can also use the My Property address search to view the Council Tax band for your property (this can be found under the Useful Information section of the results page for your search). The amount of Council Tax to be paid for each band based on property location can be viewed on our Council Tax levels page.

Challenging your Council Tax property banding

More information on how your Council Tax is calculated and guidance on how to make a formal appeal can be found on the Valuation Office website.

Cumberland Council

On 1 April 2023 local government in Cumbria changed, with Cumberland Council providing all your council services.

Don't worry though, your bins will be emptied as normal, and you'll still be able to speak to the same team about any enquiries to do with things like council tax, benefits, planning or any other service.

Find out more about the changes.

Keep up to date by finding and following the new council on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
