Residents across Allerdale will have the chance to make big savings on their energy bills with the Big Allerdale Switch, a collective switching scheme which has so far saved households in the borough more than £250,000.

Registration for the autumn Big Allerdale Switch has opened again and invites people to sign up to collective energy switching where residents group together to save on gas and electricity bills. It can be used by those on dual-fuel, separate supplier contracts or on pre-payment meters.

Energy suppliers will be invited to bid against each other in an auction to find their best deal for a resident who has signed up. The customer will then be told how much they could save if they choose to switch, although they are under no obligation to do so.

In previous auctions householders in Allerdale saved an average of £300 on their annual energy costs.

The Big Allerdale Switch is free to join and simple to sign up and is administered by Allerdale Borough Council. Anyone wishing to join the scheme should go online to www.allerdale.gov.uk/warmhomes by 8th October 2019 and follow the links. Full details of annual energy consumption and current supplier is needed to sign up.

Cllr Stephen Stoaddart, Executive member for housing, health and wellbeing, said:

“The council has run this scheme for a number of years now and it has helped many people make considerable savings on their bills.

“At a time when household costs are rising it is more important than ever for people to be able to save money. Allerdale takes part in this scheme to help tackle inequality and make sure residents are getting the best value from their energy bills.”

The council is running the switching initiative as part of the Big Community Switch, a scheme involving a number of local authorities throughout the country. The Big Community Switch is operated by i-Choosr, an independent company with experience in collective switching schemes. It works by setting up a reverse auction and inviting energy suppliers to offer their cheapest dual fuel and electricity only deals.
