Electors in Allerdale are being encouraged to make sure they are registered to vote and their details on the electoral register are correct.

And the call is especially important for residents in Silloth, now that an election for the parish council is due to be held on 17 October.

The Council is currently carrying out its annual canvass which ensures the electoral register is up to date.

Household Enquiry Forms were initially sent out to every household back in August asking residents to check the details, make any changes, and indicate whether anyone was missing. Around 65% of households responded.

Those households which didn’t respond recently received a follow-up reminder form. The Council encourages all those who receive this to check it, make any changes and send this back to the Council.

Anyone who needs to be added to the electoral register has been sent an Invitation to Register form. Those who receive this form can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vohttp://www.gov.uk/register-to-votete or complete the form and return it to the Council’s electoral services team.

The call coincides with the announcement of an election in Silloth for the parish council to be held on 17 October 2019, with five candidates standing for election.

Residents in the Silloth Parish Council area have until 1 October 2019 to register to vote if they are not already on the electoral register, and until 5pm on 2 October to apply for a postal vote and until 5pm on 9 October 2019 to apply for a proxy vote. More information on the election, including more details on the candidates, can be found on the Council’s website: www.allerdale.gov.uk

Andrew Seekings, Electoral Registration Officer, said: “It’s crucial that everyone responds to the canvass to ensure their details are correct on the electoral register. You never know when an election – either locally or nationally – will be called, and we really don’t want people to lose their right to vote because they didn’t get round to updating their information.”
