Allerdale Borough Council has decided not to go ahead with two Christmas festivals later this year.

Cockermouth normally hosts the Taste Cumbria Christmas festival in early December, and the council’s events team also hoped to organise a Christmas-themed event in Workington too.

However, the decision to cancel these events was taken in light of the government’s recent tightening of restrictions due to coronavirus, which could last for the next six months.

The council recently announced that its flagship Taste Cumbria Food Festival was not to go ahead at the end of September due to the restrictions and the rising number of positive coronavirus cases locally and nationally.

Cllr Mike Johnson, deputy leader with responsibility for economic growth, said:

“We’re bitterly disappointed to have to make this decision. However, whilst we know how popular these festivals are with everyone including our businesses, public safety is always our top priority and so we didn’t think it was right to go ahead with these events this year.

“I hope we’ll be able to hold these and many other festivals as soon as possible and when the time is right.”
