Allerdale Borough Council members agreed to change the ward boundaries and councillor numbers for Workington Town Council at their meeting on Wednesday 5 December.

This will mean that councillor numbers will fall from 30 to 25 and the number of wards drop from eleven to eight.

The borough council carried out a review of the Workington Town Council governance arrangements after it received a request from the town council to do so in October 2017. A working group of the 15 borough councillors who represent Workington was set up and looked into the issue, which included two public consultation exercises on the issue.

Allerdale councillors met to consider the recommendations of the working group at its Full Council meeting on 5 December and agreed to make the changes. The borough council will now draw up an order to be considered by the Boundary Commission. If approved by them, the changes will take effect at the elections in May 2019.

Councillor Stephen Stoddart, who represents Moorclose, suggested an amendment to include the separation of Moorclose from the town council to form its own parish council. This was as a result of a petition he submitted to the borough council calling for a separate parish council for Moorclose. The working group had considered the petition, but offered no recommendation on the issue. Councillors voted against the amendment.

Councillors also agreed the recommendations of the other community governance review working group which have been set-up to consider the governance arrangements for Broughton, Embleton and Winscales Parish Council as well as Keswick Town Council. All the recommendations of the working group were agreed.

This will mean that the number of councillors on Brooughton Parish Council reduces from 13 to ten, Embleton Parish Council will be just one ward rather than the current three wards, and there will be no changes to Winscales parish council. There had been proposals to integrate Winscales into the Workington Town Council area, however the local Winscales community showed their desire to maintain the parish council. Councillors also agreed that the Keswick Town Council borders should change to incorporate areas which are currently in neighbouring parishes.
