Allerdale Borough Council has teamed up with Workington Town Rugby League Club to provide free tickets to local children so that they can go to the Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) warm-up game in Workington next week.

On 7 October 2022, Cumbria Rugby League take on World Cup entrants Jamaica at a warm-up game at Derwent Park. The game starts at 7:45pm.

To provide local children with the opportunity to take part in the event, Allerdale Borough Council have given a grant of £5,000 to Workington Town Rugby League Club to fund free tickets for kids to the match.

Workington Rugby League players will be visiting community clubs and primary schools over the next few days to distribute up to 1,500 of the free tickets.

Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, Councillor Mike Johnson, said: “I’m delighted to see the match between Cumbria Rugby League and the Jamaican Rugby League team taking place at the home of Workington Town RLFC, Derwent Park. By providing the grant of £5,000, we hope to enable primary school children to take part in this exciting event for free.

“Rugby League is enjoyed by countless people across Allerdale, and this is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy this unique and exciting fixture. We are delighted to play our part in helping to grow interest in the sport as we work with Workington Town and Workington Reds to develop the proposals for the Cumberland Sports Village.”

Director of Workington Town, Graeme Peers said: "It's fantastic to see the positive reaction to the game and we're looking forward to a healthy crowd and one of those special games under the lights of Derwent Park.

“The assistance from Allerdale Borough Council can't be underestimated and the shared goal of getting as many youngsters watching and then inspired to play by watching high level sport on their doorstep was a key driver for both parties.

There is no doubt that the area is working towards a much better future in relation to facilities and opportunities, and we will be playing our part as our infrastructure grows.”

The Jamaican Rugby League team will be in Workington from Wednesday 5 October and will be taking part in a number of community events in the days leading up to the match.

Early bird tickets for the match are also available, offering great savings on matchday prices. In addition to this, there are also grandstand seated tickets and family tickets still available.
