Anyone interested in helping to shape the future of Maryport’s town centre is being urged to attend a range of public consultation events.

Allerdale Borough Council is currently working on a number of projects aimed at regenerating the town, including schemes focusing on the high street, promenade and historic buildings.

Last year the Council was successful getting to the next stage of the Government’s £1bn Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) programme and work to submit a formal bid for Maryport has been moving forward.

If successful in gaining funding, the pot of money could be used to improve transport and access into town centres, convert empty retail units into new homes and workplaces, and invest in vital infrastructure. It is hoped that the funding will be used to help high streets all over the country adapt to changes in the retail industry.

Architects Buttress were appointed to design the bid on behalf of the Council and the views of Maryport residents, workers and visitors are crucial to this process. Buttress have organised several consultation events in the town on Tuesday, February 11 and Wednesday, February 12 which will be made up of drop-in sessions, interactive workshops and presentations.

The locations of the consultation events are:

  • 57 Senhouse Street (former Simply Food & Drinks shop) - 10am to 4pm on both days
  • Maryport Library – 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm (Wednesday only)
  • The Settlement – 5pm to 7pm (Tuesday) and 10am to 12pm (Wednesday)
  • The Wave Centre – 5pm to 8pm (Tuesday)

Mike Johnson, Deputy Leader and Executive member for economic growth, community development and placemaking, said:

“Our Maryport regeneration plans are progressing well with lots of work going on behind the scenes by officers, councillors, partners and our consultants.

“Feedback from those who live, work and visit Maryport, though, are absolutely crucial to these plans. We need your views so I’d urge you, if you’re interesting in helping the town get even better, to come along to these events.

“If you’re unable to make it along there will also be an online consultation and you can contact the Maryport Regeneration team anytime to give your views.”

Some consultation has already taken place with businesses during the development of the town's new business group while more public consultation events are planned for April. A final business case submission will be made in the summer.
