Sports clubs will be able to apply for a new grant from Allerdale Borough Council to help them improve accessibility, participation and to support recovery from impacts of the coronavirus.

Applications to the Allerdale Sports Development Grant scheme are invited from not-for-profit organisations, charities, social enterprises and schools where their work will benefit the residents of the borough.

Grants from £2,000 up to a maximum of £10,000 will be available with funding being provided to organisations that can demonstrate their project will make a significant difference to their members and users from the local community and should also help to deliver a social/economic impact in the Allerdale area.

The project must deliver against at least two of the following priorities:

  • Create new participation opportunities (or safeguard existing participation)
  • Improve resilience (post Covid-19)
  • Improve economic/environmental sustainability of club or sports element of organisation
  • Focus on improving access for those more likely to be less active
  • Encourage new participants into sport or physical activity through innovative ideas to encourage new participants into sport/physical activity

The money to support the grant scheme has come from the Sellafield Ltd Social Impact Investment Fund (SIIF), an annual arrangement between Sellafield and the Council offering an opportunity to respond in a flexible manner to support employment, economic and social growth in the borough.

Cllr Tony Markley, Executive member for environmental services, said:

“All aspects of the community have been hit hard by the pandemic and sports clubs and associations are no exception. Having physical activities that are accessible and available are vital in giving people the opportunity to lead healthy lifestyles which is why we were keen to see some specific support offered to the fantastic clubs in the borough.

“If you help run a sports club locally then please look at this scheme and consider if you and the community you serve can benefit from it.”

Applications forms are now live on the Council’s website at https://www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/sport-leisure-arts-culture/sport-allerdale/sports-development/allerdale-sports-development-grant/.

Applications will be on a first come first served basis until all funding is allocated.

Any queries from sports clubs about the grant scheme should email rebecca.stamper@allerdale.gov.uk.
