A new Mayor of Allerdale has been appointed for the forthcoming year.

At Allerdale Borough Council’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Cllr Allan Daniels was confirmed as the new mayor having served for the last year as deputy.

Cllr Daniels represents the Keswick ward on Allerdale Borough Council.

His chosen charity for the year is Keswick Mountain Rescue.

At the meeting Cllr Daniels paid tribute to the outgoing Mayor Cllr Malcolm Grainger. He also said: “It is a real honour to be elected as Mayor of Allerdale. It is particularly special to be the last Mayor ahead of the changes to local government from April next year and I am truly humbled to be the last councillor to wear these chains of office as the Mayor of Allerdale.

“My chosen charity is the Keswick Mountain Rescue who do an incredible job – all as volunteers – to rescue those who find themselves in difficulty.”

Cllr Bill Pegram, who represents the Maryport South ward, will serve as deputy mayor.

During the AGM the outgoing mayor, Cllr Malcolm Grainger, thanked everyone who has helped him raise almost £10,351.94 for Great North Air Ambulance and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice during his term in office.

Each charity has received £5,175.97.

Cllr Grainger said: “It has been an honour to be Mayor of Allerdale over the last year. In my time as Mayor, I have been invited to an array of great events, and met some fantastic people from across the County.

“I’m proud of what has been achieved over the last 12 months, and I’d like to thank everyone who has helped raise over £10,000 for the Great North Air Ambulance and Jigsaw for their generosity.”
