Radiation

Radiation and radioactivity is encountered every day, mostly from natural sources and is harmless.

Sources of man-made radioactivity are heavily controlled by law. Humans generate useful types of radiation including x-rays, radio, radar and microwaves.

West Cumbria houses a multi-functional nuclear site. More information can be found on the Gov.UK website

Nuclear regulation and monitoring

Environmental levels of radiation are monitored through the sampling of air, drinking water, foods, and beaches. Businesses and organisations wishing to use radioactive materials must be licensed  and these are enforced by the Environment Agency .

RIMNET is a network that advises the Government and local authorities on actions following a radiation incident. More information can be found on the Gov.UK website.

Mobile phone signals

Mobile phone companies must submit a certificate with each application for a mobile phone mast to prove that the levels are not exceeded. School grounds concerned about radiation can request measurements from Ofcom.

On 1 April 2023 local government in Cumbria changed, with Cumberland Council providing all your council services.

Don't worry though, your bins will be emptied as normal, and you'll still be able to speak to the same team about any enquiries to do with things like council tax, benefits, planning or any other service.

Find out more about the changes.

Keep up to date by finding and following the new council on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
