Extra garden waste collections will be carried out across parts of Allerdale on Saturday, August 14th for households who’ve recently received multiple missed collections.

The issues over the last few weeks have been caused by a combination of staff from Allerdale Waste Services (AWS) needing to self-isolate and other unforeseen absences.

Allerdale Borough Council and collection partners AWS would like to apologise for the inconvenience this has caused residents but are now offering an extra collection to help households get rid of their excess garden waste.

Although it is not possible to offer a collection to each household in Allerdale, the extra collection day will focus on those properties whose garden bins have been missed on multiple occasions.

Collections that are intended to be provided are in the areas of:

  • Pardshaw, Lorton, Broughton, Cockermouth

  • Bassenthwaite, Keswick, Hesket Newmarket, Caldbeck,

  • Salterbeck and other areas of Workington

  • Rosley, Sebergham, Welton, Thursby

  • Allonby, Westnewton, Plumbland, Gilcrux, Crosby Villa and Aspatria

However, a full list of properties that are scheduled to receive a collection can be found on the council’s website at https://www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/bincollections/. Please note the online or printable calendars will not show the extra collections.

Cllr Jim Lister, the council’s Executive member, for environmental services, said:

“The AWS crews have worked exceptionally hard throughout the pandemic to keep collections going and I know everyone in the borough is grateful to them for that. Although coronavirus restrictions have eased, cases locally have remained high in recent weeks and like every other industry Covid-19 infections, the need to self-isolate and other absences have taken its toll on the workforce.

“The crews have needed to prioritise resources on general waste and recycling meaning that unfortunately some properties have not received garden waste collections and we apologise for that. But we’re pleased to now be able to offer the extra collection on Saturday for many properties, thanks to the collaboration of AWS staff, and we encourage householders to take advantage of it.”

Residents who are due to receive an extra collection are asked to have their bins out by 6am on Saturday morning.

Householders who’ve had a missed garden waste collection but are not due to receive an extra collection on Saturday (August 14th) are advised to place their bins out on their next scheduled garden collection day. Regular collection days can be found at https://www.allerdale.gov.uk/en/bincollections/
