Former Allerdale Borough Council website

This is the old website for the former Allerdale Borough Council which became Cumberland Council on 1 April 2023. We are currently in the process of moving content from this website to the Cumberland Council website so that it is all in one place. You may therefore notice that old pages you are used to using on this site, are being redirected to the Cumberland Council site.

Councillor allowances

Councillors receive a range of allowances which are intended to recognise the time Councillors devote to their role. This includes meeting with their constituents and political groups, and also to cover incidental costs, such as the use of their homes, for which no provision is made.

The Council is required to publish annually the total sum paid to each Councillor in respect of 'Basic', 'Attendance' and 'Special Responsibility' allowances paid in each financial year.

Independent Panel for Councillor Allowances

Councillor Allowances are decided by an Independent Panel for Councillor Allowances which is made up of people independent from the Council. The Panel is responsible for reviewing the allowances paid to Borough Councillors and making recommendations to the Council about them.

Councillors vote to accept or reject the recommendations in Full Council, usually in March each year.

Council Strategy design

Cumberland Council

On 1 April 2023 local government in Cumbria changed, with Cumberland Council providing all your council services.

Don't worry though, your bins will be emptied as normal, and you'll still be able to speak to the same team about any enquiries to do with things like council tax, benefits, planning or any other service.

Find out more about the changes.
